Results Management

Remove the Risk of Missed Results

Multi-centre studies have shown up to 40% of lab results ordered in hospitals are never seen. This is a typical example of how IT systems that do not support clinical care result in logistical complexity for staff that leads to poor clinical outcomes.

With Miya, the following improvements are observed in results management:

  • Faster time to treatment. As soon as clinically significant diagnostic data is posted on the hospital’s diagnostic systems, it is immediately made known in the treatment area thus avoiding delays in clinical staff having to “find” important clinical data
  • Focus on most urgent cases. SecondScreen features ‘At a glance’ identification of clinical risk for any diagnostic test, including radiology, pathology and ECGs.
  • Significant clinician productivity improvement
  • Team based approach to care delivery
  • Reduction in repeat ordering after transfers due to visibility of previous orders
  • No significant missed test results thanks to monitoring and alerting
  • Reduced risk of litigation through improved governance
  • Escalation of high clinical risk situations through alarms and alerts

Beyond accessing results when a patient is in the hospital a further challenge is to follow up results returned after a patient has gone home or between outpatient visits. Miya Results Tracker is specifically designed to address this difficult problem.

Alcidion understands that the biggest barrier to checking results is work load. Using the Miya Platform organisations can remove all significant missed results, even after a patient goes home. Furthermore, Miya has a big benefit on clinical productivity by saving repeated log ins and checking for results that are not there.

  • Miya Decision Support Engine (DSE) risk rates results and can generate alerts so that important results won’t simply sit in the IT system waiting for someone to remember to check them.
  • Miya Clinical Dashboard presents results with clear colour coding so anyone in the care team can quickly see abnormal results as they arrive
  • Clinical ID allows clinical staff to log in with a simple swipe of a card to get access to their list of patients and risk rated results, reducing a complex workflow to < 1 second
  • Miya Results Tracker sends emails to designated clinicians to manage results if they are missed in daily work or if they return after a patient is discharged; it is highly configurable to focus on results that are important.

Managing Cost

Lab and radiology ordering are some of the most significant non-salary costs in a hospital. While some tests are expensive, ordering costs are also generated by repeated ordering of “usual” tests. A significant number of these are redundant from a clinical standpoint, or not focussed.

Some estimates suggest that there can be over 30% cost reductions through improving test ordering patterns (depending on the charging model for pathology). There is also significant clinical benefit in improving ordering behaviour to reduce the effect of false positives and reducing the “noise” of tests that aren’t clinically relevant.

The Miya Platform can support units manage ordering costs through:

  • Order sets to make the right thing easy to do
  • Authorisation so certain tests require senior clinician approval
  • Visibility through the Clinical Dashboard so all team members can see what has been ordered as it occurs
  • Alerting if ordering patterns or costs change suddenly
  • Detection of redundant ordering patterns

Each of these options can be configured to make sure they are clinically meaningful to each unit.

Results Management Tools

Clinical Dashboard

The Miya Clinical Dashboard is carefully designed to present risk-rated clinical information to staff quickly. The Clinical Dashboard is extensible; it can incorporate lab results, flow KPIs, patient observations, right up to complete clinical documentation for full electronic health records. It integrates with Clinical ID to provide fast log in and customisation.

Results Tracking

Manually checking that every significant result is seen for your patients in time consuming and often impractical. Configure Miya Results Tracker to monitor important lab results and radiology. Results that are missed while the patient is in the department, or those returned post-discharge home are tracked and managed quickly. A full audit trail is maintained, and workflow automation provided for letter generation and notifying GPs or risk managers.

Order Entry & Sets

Miya’s QuickPicks allow you to configure the most common orders for fast access. To control ordering behaviour and costs restricted orders are clearly visible can be configured to require senior clinician approval — quickly using Clinical ID. Orders can be printed or sent electronically with full tracking of the order lifecycle. Order sets can be configured and recommended by condition or other patient factors.

Alerts & Decision Support

The Miya Decision Support Engine (DSE) monitors all data flowing through the system and can trigger alerts and notifications. We call this active monitoring. Miya plays an active role in supporting clinical staff. The Miya DSE can be configured to monitor and alert for clinical and organisational risks.

Performance Monitoring

Miya captures KPI performance and risk data in real-time. Measures include occupancy, length of stay, clinical activity and costs. You can add additional metrics as. Managers and clinical heads can get a real-time view of the organisation and respond to changes as they occur, rather than months after the event. As with all parts of the Miya Platform, alerts can be attached to any data or thresholds.
