Fast Log In

Dramatic Productivity Improvement with Clinical ID

Security is a complex issue in health care. Unlike a typical office environment, clinical staff move quickly between locations and need to access information that is relevant to them quickly. Logging in and out of computers can take up significants amounts of time that could otherwise be used looking after patients.

Another challenge in health care is how to handle security for agency staff or locums that may only be working in the organisation for a few days at short notice. Here is why security is complex in inpatient and emergency settings:

  • Clinical staff share computers as they move between patients and areas, so logging on and off occur frequently
  • Log in and log out times are usually long, over 1 hour a day can be spent waiting for computers to log per shift
  • Clinical staff often use a shared account to avoid log in, so identifying who did what is impossible
  • Often getting new users on to the shared electronic staff directory is slow so staff share passwords
  • Agency staff and locums attend at short notice and often can’t be put on the electronic staff directory

Alcidion’s Clinical ID is designed specifically for busy clinical environments to allow users to rapidly access information, and to assist them in managing security access locally if required.

Clinical ID provides the following benefits:

  • Allows clinical to staff to log in to applications in under 1 second using RFID, or other tokens
  • Integrates with clinical applications to inform them of user log in and log out so they can quickly display the relevant information for the clinical user
  • Highly flexible configuration so username and password can be required for higher security tasks such as medication ordering
  • Integrates with the organisation’s electronic staff directory (e.g. Active Directory)
  • Integrates with multiple tokens for fast access, such as RFID cards, iButtons, biometrics
  • Allows units to quickly add agency and temporary staff with peer authentication

Governance and Accountability Without Compromise

With it’s integration into applications, such as the Miya Clinical Dashboard, identifying yourself using Clinical ID actually saves time! You can set your preferred view in The Miya Clinical Dashboard so when you swipe your RFID card you are logged in and your preferred filters and sorts are applied to the patient list, all in under 1 second of walking up to the computer.

When user identification and authentication is painless, Miya can now track who has witnessed results and when clinical staff providing consults have seen the patient they have been requested to see. Access control can be easily implemented to protect certain orders or requests because Clinical ID supports authentication by senior staff.

Clinical ID Features

Clinical Dashboard

The Miya Clinical Dashboard is carefully designed to present risk-rated clinical information to staff quickly. The Clinical Dashboard is extensible; it can incorporate lab results, flow KPIs, patient observations, right up to complete clinical documentation for full electronic health records. It integrates with Clinical to provide fast log in and customisation.

Cards, Tokens, Biometrics

Clinical ID integrates with RFID cards, other tokens such as iButtons, and biometrics. Commonly, existing door access RFID cards are used to minimise changes to existing workflows, and to avoid clinical staff having to remember yet another card.

Directory Integration

Clinical ID integrates with enterprise directory services, such as Active Directory. Clinical ID can be configured to require username and password authentication for the first time during a shift, and then card or biometric identification thereafter. Certain actions, such as prescribing, can require two factor authentication if required. Clinical ID also supports a local directory for users who need to be working in the unit at short notice. Expiry dates can be set for automatic closing of accounts for staff on rotation or limited time contracts.
